To be “ahead of the times” is often the ultimate compliment for a film. It means a movie was not only a masterpiece, but something future filmmakers look to for inspiration for their own work. However, being ahead of the times is usually an albatross around a film’s neck which can last for decades until popular culture catches up with it.
